The Light of Childhood

Untitled (The Light of Childhood) — Olaf Christoffersen, mid-1930s. A close, soft-focus portrait of a child in a fur-collared coat and a soft bonnet tied under the chin, turned toward the camera. The face fills most of the frame against a dark ground.

The child fills the frame, seen close and slightly from the side, the head a little inclined and turned toward the camera with a faint smile. A soft bonnet, tied with a ribbon under the chin, sits back on the head, and a fur collar rises around the neck; a coat with a light button closes below. Soft light falls from the left, modelling the face and catching the fringe and the fur, while the ground behind stays dark. The print is soft-focused in the pictorialist manner, warm in tone and moderate in contrast, the highlights held on the forehead and cheek, the shadows deep at the edges. The sitter is Turid Wasteson, the photographer’s daughter.

Technical Details: Warm-toned, soft-focus gelatin silver print on heavy cream mount with a wide window margin; the verso bears a pencilled catalogue number. No title on the object.
