Olaf Christoffersen

The Man Behind the Lens (1899–1984)

Introduction to Olaf Christoffersen

Born on March 6, 1899, Olaf Christoffersen was the son of coal merchant Martin Kristoffersen and Mina Josefine Amalie Samuelsen. Raised in the vibrant neighborhood of Grünerløkka in Oslo, Olaf's industrious spirit shone through early as he embarked on his working life at the tender age of 15, apprenticing at Kværner Brug. His commitment to the company was steadfast, culminating in a career that spanned over five decades until his retirement in 1969.

A Life Through the Lens

An engineer by education, Olaf graduated from Oslo Technical School, and he was an expert in hydroelectric power and the operation of water turbines. Yet, beyond his technical acumen, it was through the lens of his camera that Olaf truly expressed his creative essence. In the interwar period, he chronicled Oslo’s urban scenes and street life with a distinctive and romantic flair, capturing the architecture and its inhabitants in a nostalgic light that still resonates today.

The Evolution of an Urban Image

In the heart of Oslo, Olaf Christoffersen captured the pulse of the city as it embraced the modern age. His urban photography chronicled the dynamic transformation of streets and neighborhoods, painting a picture of daily life amidst the backdrop of architectural evolution. Olaf also ventured into the scenic surroundings of Asker, where his photography took a pastoral turn. There, amidst the tranquil landscapes just outside Oslo, he crafted images imbued with longing and lyrical nostalgia, images that transcended mere photography to become works of art.

Preserving a Photographic Heritage

Olaf's photographic legacy was carefully managed by his daughter, Turid Wasteson, who ensured that his work was not only preserved at Preus Museum around the turn of the millennium but also made accessible to future generations through scanning and digitization. The legacy is now carried forward by Turid's son, Øystein, who grew up with Olaf as a grandfather—a quiet figure who spent countless hours in the amber glow of the darkroom in the basement
