Heart’s Reach

Untitled (Heart’s Reach) — Olaf Christoffersen, Asker, late 1920s. Seen from behind, a young child on a plank step reaches for the door of an outhouse, a carved heart at its centre, trousers already halfway down. The scene is lit in sharp, low sunlight.

The child is seen from behind, small against an outhouse of dark vertical boards, standing on a plank step and reaching up toward a pale door with a heart cut into it. The eye goes first to the raised hand and the heart above it, then to the trousers already slipping down, and follows the hard diagonal shadow thrown across the lit boards. Sharp side light from the right divides the frame into bright door and dark cladding. Contrast is high, the tonal separation strong, the foreground grass and step carrying the mid-tones. The child is likely the photographer’s son, Per.

Technical Details: Warm-toned gelatin silver print on heavy cream mount with a dark border rule, signed lower right; the verso bears pencilled and crayon catalogue numbers.
