Snowfall

Snövær (Snowfall) — Olaf Christoffersen, Oslo, 1935. A winter street scene framed by the snow-covered bodywork of two cars, a lone figure advancing along the road between them. The whole view is broken by falling snow.

The eye enters low, between the snow-laden bodywork of two cars that close the frame left and right, and settles first on a rounded, snow-capped form at the lower centre. Beyond it, a woman in a long dark coat walks toward the camera along the white road, softened almost to a silhouette by the falling snow. Behind, an older car and building facades are compressed toward pale. The light is diffuse and the contrast moderate; snow gathers the highlights on the vehicles while the figure and the recesses hold the darker tones, and the fall of snow breaks the whole surface.
