Snowfall

Snowfall (1935) captures a winter day in the city, where Olaf Christoffersen allows the snow to partially dissolve the scene. The image balances between documentary realism and atmospheric expression, reflecting the modernist tendency toward structured compositions. Fascination with urban environments and modern lifestyles, combined with an experimental exploration of perspective and depth, reflects both the aesthetic and technical innovation of modernism.

A lone figure crosses the street in heavy snowfall, partially obscured by motion blur and the dense curtain of snowflakes. In the foreground, thick layers of snow rest on cars and street fixtures, while the background fades into an indistinct urban space. The perspective draws the viewer into the image, where the dynamic snowfall contrasts with the city’s static elements. This photograph was exhibited at Oslo Kamera Klubb’s 25-Year Photography Retrospective in 1946.

Technical Details: The photograph was taken with a Voigtländer "Superb" camera, equipped with a Heliar lens. A wide aperture of f/3.5 and a shutter speed of 1/25 second create a balance between sharpness and motion blur, enhancing the sense of movement in the snow. The image was exposed on 6×6 cm Selo Hyper Panchromatic roll film, known for its ability to capture tonal range in high-contrast and challenging light conditions.
