Speed Skating

Sköitelöp (Speed Skating) — Olaf Christoffersen, Frogner stadion, Oslo, ca. 1925. Seen from above, a packed crowd in coats and hats lines a curving ice track, along which one skater races in the open. The figure is alone against the mass of onlookers.

The photograph is taken from a raised, oblique viewpoint, looking down over a dense crowd of spectators — men in dark coats and hats, packed shoulder to shoulder — who line the near edge of a curving skating track. Along the far, snow-banked edge of the ice, a single skater races in a forward-leaning posture, dark against the open pale surface. The crowd fills the left and lower half of the frame; the ice opens out to the right, almost empty. Contrast is high between the massed dark figures and the bright ice, and the rendering is sharp; behind the crowd, a fence and building facades close the top of the frame.

Technical Details: Gelatin silver print, mounted on cream board; signed at lower right and titled Sköitelöp in pencil at lower left of the mount. The verso is inscribed "Olaf Christoffersen" and, in a second hand, titled "Fra Stadion", with a pencilled catalogue number and a later pencil date. In the 1920s, Frogner stadion was a principal Norwegian venue for speed skating, hosting national and international championships; skating was among the most popular spectator sports of the period, drawing large crowds to the arena.
