Potato Gatherers

Potetplukkere (Potato Gatherers) — Olaf Christoffersen, 1926. A sloping potato field is seen from below, the turned earth filling the foreground and the figures set high against a pale ground. A two-horse team works the crest at left; two gatherers bend to the rows at right.

Two figures bend low over the rows at the right of the frame, gathering potatoes from the turned earth. At the left, a man in a hat and light shirt walks behind a two-horse team drawing a wheeled implement, likely a horse-drawn potato lifter. The view is taken from below the slope: broken soil and potato haulm fill the lower half of the frame, and the working figures are set high against a pale upper register. Contrast is moderate; the dark figures and horses hold the deepest tones, while the trees beyond the crest rise pale and low in contrast with distance.

Technical Details: Likely a warm-toned print with soft pictorialist rendering, set within a dark inner mount on cream card with deckled edges. Signed and dated -26 in pencil at lower right; the title «Potetplukkere» appears in pencil on the verso.
