In the Enigma of Light

In the Enigma of Light (working title) — Olaf Christoffersen, Oslo, ca. 1920s.The camera is positioned slightly above a cluster of wooden buildings, framing a diagonal roofline in the foreground and a towered structure to the left. Two electric lights are suspended in mist; strong diagonals meet a central field of diffused light.

The motif shows rooftops partly obscured by fog and lit by artificial light. A dominant roof ridge runs diagonally from the lower right toward the center, counterbalanced by a vertical tower form on the left. The buildings are layered in shallow depth, with the foreground darker and the background progressively diffused. Two electric lamps form the brightest points, producing a central bright area that shifts into mid-grey and deep shadow. Contrast remains low to moderate, with continuity of tone favored over sharp detail.

Technical Details: Gelatin silver print (likely) on matte paper, mounted on a light cream board with wide presentation margins. A handwritten signature appears in pencil at the lower right margin.
