Paths of Childhood

Untitled (Paths of Childhood) — Olaf Christoffersen, likely on the way up toward Skaugumsåsen in Asker, near Semsvannet, c. 1930. The photograph looks up a grassy track toward a child walking away from the camera, seen from behind. Trees close the right of the frame and a house stands on the slope beyond.

A child in a light hat, white shirt, dark shorts and knee socks walks away from the camera along a grassy cart track, carrying a thin stick in one hand. The twin ruts of the track curve up from the foreground and lead the eye toward a rise, where a timber house with a pitched roof stands among trees at the upper left. Dense scrub and tall grass bank the track at the left, birch and other trees closing the right. The view is taken at the child’s height along the track. Contrast is moderate; sunlight holds the figure and the grass as the brightest tones against the darker mass of foliage. The child is Per, the photographer’s son.

Technical Details: Likely a gelatin silver print, soft in handling. No object inscription is recorded.
