A pocket watch, its face reading twelve o’clock, stands upright on a draped tabletop beside a small porcelain figure that reaches toward the dial. A lit candle in a low holder sits in the foreground, close to the picture’s centre, and is the only light in the scene. Because the light comes from below and in front, the watch and figure cast two large shadows onto the plain wall behind: a rounded form from the watch, and a raised-armed silhouette from the figure. Tonal range is wide, from the blown highlight of the flame and watch face to the near-black of the shadows, with the mid-tones held in the draped cloth. The title, written on the mount, reads Godt Aar! — “Happy New Year”.

Technical Details: Warm-toned gelatin silver print on heavy cream mount, titled and signed on the mount; verso bears a Fredriksstad Foto-Klub 1929 exhibition label. A staged candlelit still life. The print was hung at Fredriksstad Foto-Klub's 3rd National Exhibition of Pictorial Photography, 1929.
