Oslo Harbor Warehouse (working title) — Olaf Christoffersen, Oslo, 1920s. The photograph looks across the harbor toward Oslo Havnelager, with several vessels moored along the quay and a large ship structure in the right foreground. Quay lights and their reflections organize the scene under low evening or night light.

Warehouse architecture, moored vessels, quay lighting, and harbor water structure the image. The composition is arranged in horizontal layers: warehouse, quay, vessels, and water. Vertical light reflections provide the main visual rhythm, while the ship structure at right and the quay edge in the foreground establish a close harbor viewpoint. A mooring buoy with visible line appears in the water near the reflections. The scene is defined by electric light rather than daylight, with localized lamp brightness and restrained detail across the darker harbor surfaces. Oslo Havnelager was completed in 1920. Cranes visible between the quay lights connect the moored vessels, quay handling, and warehouse storage.

"April Sun" is an evocative photograph by Olaf Christoffersen, captured in the Hammersborg area of Oslo, near the Trinity Church. The image captures a sunny day where people, both men and women, are out for a walk, offering a glimpse into everyday life in Oslo at the time.

In “April Sun,” we see a group of people enjoying a sunny day, including a mother holding hands with her children. The sunlight creates long shadows, enhancing the warm, almost timeless atmosphere. The image conveys a sense of calm and community, typical of a weekend or a quiet weekday in April.

In the photograph "Old Deichman" from 1934, Olaf Christoffersen documents a significant phase in Oslo's urban development. The newly constructed Deichman Library, inaugurated in 1933, stands in stark contrast to the surrounding older buildings, with the Trinity Church looming in the background.

The image captures a transitional period in Oslo’s history, where new monumental structures like the Deichman Library, designed by Nils Reiersen, rise in the heart of the city. The ongoing construction and the contrast between old and new symbolize the city’s expansion and modernization. The deep shadows and close composition convey a sense of weight, emphasizing the significance of this monumental project.

Olaf Christoffersen, From Vaterland — Vaterland, Oslo, Norway, 1920s (late). The view is taken from beneath an underpass, using the arch as a dark frame toward quay-side industrial buildings. At the far-right edge, the Akerselva is visible.

A single walking figure appears in silhouette under the arch, establishing scale and direction. Wheel ruts and dragged tracks cut diagonally through snow and slush, leading the eye toward the right background. The figure sits left of centre, balancing the built mass and river edge to the right, with clear layering from foreground shadow to the brighter street beyond. Backlit winter snow produces strong contrast: deep shade under the arch and compressed highlights on the roadway. This stretch of the Akerselva at Vaterland was culverted here in the 1960s.

From Akershus — Olaf Christoffersen, Akershus festning, Oslo, 1927. Framed by the dark vault of a fortress passage, the photograph opens onto a descending lane with three figures and the tower of Johanneskirken beyond.

The view passes through a fortress archway down a sloping street toward the spired tower of Johanneskirken, with three small figures walking in mid-distance. The arch frames the scene as a dark border around a brighter, narrower field of city beyond. Contrast is high; the print surface shows the broken, granular texture characteristic of pictorialist pigment processes. Johanneskirken was demolished in 1928, the year after this photograph was taken, following damage from the 1904 Oslo earthquake and rot in its timber pile foundations.

In the Enigma of Light (working title) — Olaf Christoffersen, Oslo, ca. 1920s.The camera is positioned slightly above a cluster of wooden buildings, framing a diagonal roofline in the foreground and a towered structure to the left. Two electric lights are suspended in mist; strong diagonals meet a central field of diffused light.

The motif shows rooftops partly obscured by fog and lit by artificial light. A dominant roof ridge runs diagonally from the lower right toward the center, counterbalanced by a vertical tower form on the left. The buildings are layered in shallow depth, with the foreground darker and the background progressively diffused. Two electric lamps form the brightest points, producing a central bright area that shifts into mid-grey and deep shadow. Contrast remains low to moderate, with continuity of tone favored over sharp detail.

I skumringen (At Dusk) — Olaf Christoffersen, Enerhaugen (Oslo), 1923. The photograph looks up a narrow, ascending street lined with wooden houses and exterior stairs. Two lit street lamps appear in the mid-ground along the right side of the road.

A street view at dusk in Enerhaugen, with a curving roadway between wooden façades. A dark building with an exterior stair occupies the left foreground, while a lighter plastered building lines the right. A masonry building closes the view in the background. The tonal range is low to moderate, with localized brightness around the lamps and subdued midtones across the street surface.

Winter shadows at Vika Terrasse (working title) — Olaf Christoffersen, Vika (Oslo), 1920s. The photograph is taken from street level at a junction, looking down a snow-covered street between apartment buildings. Vika Terrasse rises in the background, with pedestrians and a handcart in use visible in the mid-ground.

A winter street scene in Vika with people crossing a snow-covered roadway marked by wheel tracks and footprints. The composition is organized along a central perspective axis formed by the street and the flanking buildings, with a lamppost near left-center reinforcing the vertical structure. Dark figures in the foreground anchor the lower register, while the architecture recedes toward Vika Terrasse in the background. Diffuse winter light produces moderate contrast, preserving snow texture and softening distant architectural detail. The building to the right of the spire in the background was lost to fire in 1955 and replaced in 1962.

Trappen (The Steps) — Olaf Christoffersen, Deichman Library, Oslo, 1935. The photograph looks across a broad flight of stone steps in direct sunlight, a single figure standing on the steps at the left edge. Sunlight cuts the flight into alternating bands of pale tread and dark riser.

A broad flight of stone steps crosses the frame from lower left to upper right, the treads alternating pale and dark under direct sunlight. The eye follows the stepped shadow line up the flight, then returns to the single figure at the left edge — in profile, in a light cap, jacket and knee breeches, one foot placed on the tread above. Behind the steps, square piers stand on a stepped base against a dark recessed wall. Contrast is high; granular stone texture is held in the lit treads, while the shadowed risers fall to solid black.

The library had opened two years earlier, on 28 August 1933, and this photograph belongs to a group Olaf Christoffersen made of the building during its construction and completion. The verso records the exposure in his own hand: a Voigtländer «Superb» with a Heliar 75 mm lens, at 1:9 for 1/50 second in sunshine, on 6×6 roll film, Selo Hyper-Panchro. The small aperture in direct sun accounts for what the print holds — sharpness from the near treads to the piers behind, and a tonal range wide enough to keep stone texture in the lit treads while the risers read as solid black.
