Untitled (A Life Lived) — Olaf Christoffersen. A close frontal portrait of an elderly woman in a white headscarf tied under the chin, looking toward the camera. The face fills most of the frame.

The face fills the frame, seen close and a little from below, the eyes turned toward the camera. A light headscarf is wrapped over the hair and knotted beneath the chin, and the eye moves from the eyes down the deeply lined cheeks to the drawn-in mouth. Behind, the ground is thrown out of focus, holding the head forward. The light is even and fairly hard, describing the lines of the face in detail; the rendering is sharp, the tonal range running from the white scarf to the dark clothing and the shadowed background.

Oslo Harbor Warehouse (working title) — Olaf Christoffersen, Oslo, 1920s. The photograph looks across the harbor toward Oslo Havnelager, with several vessels moored along the quay and a large ship structure in the right foreground. Quay lights and their reflections organize the scene under low evening or night light.

Warehouse architecture, moored vessels, quay lighting, and harbor water structure the image. The composition is arranged in horizontal layers: warehouse, quay, vessels, and water. Vertical light reflections provide the main visual rhythm, while the ship structure at right and the quay edge in the foreground establish a close harbor viewpoint. A mooring buoy with visible line appears in the water near the reflections. The scene is defined by electric light rather than daylight, with localized lamp brightness and restrained detail across the darker harbor surfaces. Oslo Havnelager was completed in 1920. Cranes visible between the quay lights connect the moored vessels, quay handling, and warehouse storage.

Untitled (Children on Wheels) — Olaf Christoffersen, late 1930s. A steeply downward view of a sunlit gravel ground, showing the legs of two children with a scooter and a tricycle, their long shadows thrown toward the viewer. Faces are outside the frame.

The view is taken from close above, steeply down onto sunlit gravel. The eye reads first the legs of two children, cut off at the knee, and the spoked wheels of a scooter and a tricycle, then follows the long shadows these throw toward the viewer across the lower half of the frame. At the top, snow and a low fence close the ground. The shadows carry as much of the composition as the children themselves; contrast is high and the definition sharp, the light raking from behind to lay the dark shapes across the bright gravel.

Sommerkveld (Summer Night) — Olaf Christoffersen, Landøya, Asker. Two figures sit on the shore with their backs to the camera, looking out across calm water toward the low moon, which lays a bright track over the surface. A moored boat lies at the left.

The eye is drawn first to the low moon and the bright track it lays across the calm water, then to the two figures seated on rocks in the foreground, seen from behind and reduced to silhouette against the lit surface. A rowing boat is moored at the left; at the right, an upright post stands among dark rocks. Across the water, the low islands of the inner Oslofjord run along the horizon, the Nesodden peninsula lying behind them. The light is behind the scene, so the foreground falls to near-black while the water and sky hold the lighter tones; contrast is high between the dark shore and the lit water.

"April Sun" is an evocative photograph by Olaf Christoffersen, captured in the Hammersborg area of Oslo, near the Trinity Church. The image captures a sunny day where people, both men and women, are out for a walk, offering a glimpse into everyday life in Oslo at the time.

In “April Sun,” we see a group of people enjoying a sunny day, including a mother holding hands with her children. The sunlight creates long shadows, enhancing the warm, almost timeless atmosphere. The image conveys a sense of calm and community, typical of a weekend or a quiet weekday in April.

In the 1928 photograph "From the Tøyen Garden" Olaf Christoffersen captures an early view of Tøyen Hovedgård, surrounded by trees that lend the scene a nostalgic atmosphere.

The image shows Tøyen Hovedgård in Oslo, viewed through a pictorialist lens. The same trees still stand around the manor, their growth reflecting the passage of time. The photograph provides a glimpse into a period before Tøyen Garden became the Botanical Garden, with a more romantic and soft atmosphere.

Fra Etnedal (From Etnedal) — Olaf Christoffersen, Etnedal, 1934. A high, open landscape looking across rolling forest to snow-topped mountains on the horizon, framed at the right by a lone tree. The sky is broad and clouded.

The eye is carried from the heather in the foreground out across successive folds of forested hill toward a far line of snow-capped mountains, a lake set in the valley below. At the right, a lone windswept tree — likely a birch — anchors the composition, its knotted branches reaching in over the valley. Above, a broad sky of scattered cumulus fills the upper half of the frame. The light is clear and the definition sharp, the tonal range running from the bright clouds down to the dark crown of the tree and the shadowed forest; the whole is crisper than Christoffersen’s softer city work.

In the photograph "Old Deichman" from 1934, Olaf Christoffersen documents a significant phase in Oslo's urban development. The newly constructed Deichman Library, inaugurated in 1933, stands in stark contrast to the surrounding older buildings, with the Trinity Church looming in the background.

The image captures a transitional period in Oslo’s history, where new monumental structures like the Deichman Library, designed by Nils Reiersen, rise in the heart of the city. The ongoing construction and the contrast between old and new symbolize the city’s expansion and modernization. The deep shadows and close composition convey a sense of weight, emphasizing the significance of this monumental project.

In the photograph "Summer's Breath" Olaf Christoffersen captures the essence of a summer day with a simple yet expressive composition. The image depicts a child lying relaxed on a pier, surrounded by nature's calm, with traces of recent activity.

The image shows a child resting on an old pier, with wet footprints stretching along the wooden planks. These traces add a dynamic quality, suggesting the child has just been in the water, creating a subtle narrative of play and joy. The simple, clear lines of the pier lead the viewer’s eyes towards the child, while the surrounding water evokes a sense of endless summer, where time almost stands still.

In the photograph "Christmas Eve" from 1920, Olaf Christoffersen captures the quiet and magical atmosphere of a peaceful winter night in the countryside, where the tranquility of Christmas has settled over the snow-covered landscape.
